Membership for the 2022 SEASON

The Crystal Lake Yacht Club is putting a hold on processing applications for the 2022 season.  This will give the Long Range Planning Committee additional time to study the membership numbers and impact on the available facilities.  The Membership Committee will create a waiting list giving preference to active racers and applicants with a long association with the Crystal Lake Yacht Club.   Legacy applicants will be an exception to this hold.

Membership Policy & Procedures

Prior to pursuing application for membership in the CLYC, prospective members should be informed about the purpose of the club as conveyed in the CLYC By-Laws:

Article 1, Section 2. Object: This corporation is organized as a club not for pecuniary profit, and its object shall be to encourage an interest in all forms of yachting, to sponsor racing contests in the various classes of craft on Crystal Lake, Michigan; to encourage good fellowship and sportsmanship among its members; and to assist in the development and enforcement of pilot rules and such other rules as may increase the safety and welfare of its members at Crystal Lake, Michigan.”

Following are the primary criteria for encouraging membership:

1.  Dedication to Sailing: The focus of the club is sailing. Ideally new members have or are buying sailboats with the intention of racing. Members should be prepared to:

·     Support and encourage the sport of yachting, including sailing and racing;

·     Provide good fellowship among our sailing community;

·     Encourage good sportsmanship and boating safety;

·     Introduce youth to the sport of sailing and boating

2.  Children of members: As a family centered club, all of our members look forward to the days when their children will actively participate in the activities of our Club. Many of them will eventually assume leadership roles. Grandparents should encourage their children to join in order for grandchildren to fully enjoy sailing.

3.  Willingness to Volunteer: We clearly favor families who want to be involved, who think potluck dinners are fun, and who understand that their dues are insufficient to run the Club in the manner we all wish.

4.  Strong moral character: As sailors we should strive to be role models of good fellowship and sportsmanship for our children and fellow members.

CLYC Member Expectations: Guide to Smooth Sailing

CLYC’s members expect a safe and friendly atmosphere where we can enjoy good fellowship and sportsmanship centered on sailing and other Crystal Lake Yacht Club activities.  We show kindness and respect to each other, guests, staff, and visitors.

 As a Club largely supported by volunteers, our respect for and recognition of members’ contributions and time is key to sustained participation.  We make good faith efforts to assist the Board and Committees in fulfilling their responsibilities.

We protect and preserve the property of the Club and its members. We never compromise the safety of members, family or guests.  We serve as stewards of the Crystal Lake environment.

Members strive to demonstrate our common values:

•   Our love of sailing and Crystal Lake;

•   Safety in all of our club activities;

•   Good sportsmanship;

•   Honesty, Integrity, Openness and Fairness;

•   Accepting our differences while protecting the dignity of others;

•   Protecting the reputation of the club and its members;

•   Mentoring junior sailors.

While at the Club or representing the Club elsewhere, members of the CLYC, including Board and Committee members, comply with applicable law and the requirements stipulated in current published CLYC bylaws, policies, and rules.

We conform to accepted standards of behavior and decorum while at the Club or in its meetings, social gatherings, and racing activities.  Actions that violate generally accepted standards of behavior and disrupt Club business will not be tolerated.  Such actions may be grounds for review and could result in disciplinary measures. (Refer to CLYC Bylaws: Article III, Section 6)

Help us all enjoy the privilege of CLYC membership.  Smooth Sailing.
